So I thought I'd throw these at you. Did you ever wonder about the beginning of it all? It's hard to do without anthropomorphizing the big bang... or maybe that's my little UU-pagan heart thinking there's more to life than the potential mote in schroedinger's eye and the scales of einstein. or something. anyway, let me know what you think.

    The Clothesline Project 4-27-00

    Crouched on a tree's anklebones, a squirrel
    Returned from hibernation, I watch
Rags of others' memories, their childhood
Dresses and teenage jeans, ancient picture day shirts,
Pants too new to fray. Weak,
They flap, belying those who put them
    There, fluttering the ease
With which hands that, ravenous, reached
    Beneath them. We
Are cages, walls and earthquakes, all that
Of strength and stone and fear still
    Undevoured, hopeless bold on markered
    Cloth that gently, gently,
Reminds me that my shame, too, is but a rag.

    -------------

    The Time Machine 6-18-00

    Back to back, silence
    Descended in filtered light, dusting
Our eyes, fixed in mirrors where the other
Stares back past the tiny mote that falls
Into my core and trembles, so packed
    I cannot breathe without blooming
Out to reach you, and I can barely
    Bridge the glass, my hands
On distance, curving to your ages, the air
All but solid, my desperate mimicry creating
You in the space between my skin
And your reflection, your skin and my face
    Gazing through universes to you.

    ----------

    On Sleep 6-18-00

It must be fear of sleep that keeps
Me late and makes each distraction
Worthy of its consumptive rituals. Sleep
    Will bring the exhaustion
Of tomorrow, and tomorrow will be
    An ancestor of sleep, remembered
In hours longer for their wakefulness, in
Fondness blurring out the flaws, and rest
    Itself becomes distraction, pulling
All my obsessions under closed eyes.

...after letting these sit around in my head for a few days i return with some comments....

clothesline project. knowing what it's about makes it a lot more haunting... i like the changes you have made from when i read it earlier, i think it works well. it describes numbnes very well - a sense of detachment, that is only a facade.

time machine. it reminds me a lot of a poem a friend of mine wrote a few years back... i only remember parts of it, but the lasting image it keeps in my mind, is that of two people wanting/needing to touch each other but being sperated by a glass wall. this poem carries that same image very well. i like how you twist the words into new meanings ("curving to your ages", "the space between my skin"). i like the juxtaposition of distance and closeness - it works very well.

on sleep. i think i like this one best of the three. esp. the line "sleep will bring the exhaustion of tomorrow, and tomorrow will be an ancestor of sleep". it flows so very well, and contains really cool imagery that i like to just roll back and forth on my tongue and savor its taste for as long as possible. i really think the words flow especially well in this particular poem. as i may or may not have said to you before, i always admire how the words seem to have an inherent flow in your poetry, and how the lines take unexpected curves, that yet seem so very natural that i wonder why i haven't thought of it myself. so yeah, there's something really cool about the flow of the words, how they connect and form imagery and sentences, and i really can't put my finger on it, but i know that i like it.
